Many prisoners tried to establish contact with the outside world. Because correspondence was censored, notes and small packages were smuggled into and out of the camp. This was often done by workers or suppliers who had to be in the camp. Those who worked in a team outside the camp had the opportunity to come into contact with free citizens and to exchange messages or receive assistance. Some managed to escape while engaged on work outside the camp. Later the Red Cross entered the camps to provide food parcels and medicines.
